With 2024 almost over, it’s a good opportunity to talk about some future RPG releases. And there are some really great titles being worked on! So let's see what the future holds for the RPG fans!
We’ve picked some solid titles that have many players hyped and excited about their potential release. Some are continuations of existing stories and some offer completely new experiences, either way, there’s a lot to look forward to!
Obsidian’s newest title takes place in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity series. Avowed will be played from the first and third person perspective, making it an action RPG oriented unlike the active-pause system like the Pillars series.
The player will take the role of an Envoy from the Aedyr Empire, on a mission to investigate a mysterious plague rampaging through Living Lands dubbed “Dream Scourge”. But things will quickly turn dire and leave the player stranded and on his own, forced to find allies and complete his mission.
The game will put players in “biomes” instead of having a full open world to explore, which should help create more narrative driven stories for players to immerse themselves in.
Character creation plays a large role in how players can interact with the world but gives plenty of freedom in terms of combat builds, leaving specialisations up to the player after creating character.
Companions will play a vital role in providing some insight into the world of Eora, especially for those who didn’t have a chance to play Pillars of Eternity before.
Avowed has a lot of potential to mix enjoyable gameplay with immersive storytelling and a reactive world. Making it a very interesting title to pick for the fans of Pillars of Eternity series but also newcomers.
The release date is set for 18 of February 2025, changing the previous release date set in November 2024.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is being developed by Sandfall Interactive and set to be published by Kepler Interactive.
The overall atmosphere is very dark, mysterious and quite apocalyptic yet also beautiful, and entrancing. The story revolves around the “Paintress”, a being that possesses power to kill every human of a certain age. Every year, the Paintress paints the number on a Monolith, which causes every human in the world that reached that number to turn to dust.
Meaning that currently there are no humans older than 33 left in the world.
Each time before the event takes place an expedition is sent in an attempt to stop The Paintress but unfortunately they’ve failed every time. The Expedition 33 is the one that the player takes control of in hopes of ending the slow extinction of humanity.
The game has an interesting mix of JRPG turn-based style combat with game mechanics that allow players to dodge, parry and counter in real time, on top of chaining attacks and exploiting enemy weaknesses to further mix things up.
A high emphasis on players skill level is quite unique in the turn-based combat system and could be an interesting way to entice players who aren’t very fond of the system.
While no specific date of release was announced yet, the developers are hoping to complete it in summer of 2025. Interesting title to keep a track off for all JRPG enthusiasts!
An upcoming sequel to the cult classic Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines game which was released in 2004. It’s currently developed by The Chinese Room company with Paradox Interactive as its publisher.
The player will take control of an elder vampire called “Phyre” who awakens after a century long stupor. Instead of waking up in the Middle East, they wake up in an abandoned apartment with a special brand that locks their powerful abilities away. To complicate things further there’s a voice of “Fabian” who’s seemingly stuck inside Phyre’s head.
Quite a different approach from the usual humble “fledgling” vampire beginning in the setting.
Regardless, the players will have a chance to make some choices in regards to the clan, gender, background, character look etc. This should give a chance to customise Phyre into a character the player wishes to play and hopefully have the freedom to explore the world similarly to the prequel.
While the game had a rather problematic history when it comes to its development, it seems to be in the final stages of creation and is set to be released in the first half of 2025.
There’s a lot of anticipation but also concerns from the community but only time will tell if it’ll be able to reach the popularity that the Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines did.
Following the success of the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance title, the Warhorse Studios decided to continue the story of Henry from Skalitz (the protagonist) during a war-torn Bohemia in 15th century Europe.
The game is an open world action RPG, just like its predecessor. It retains its unique combat system, the save system (special potion and sleeping in bed) and the life simulation mechanic where Henry must eat, sleep and take care of his needs.
There are some quality of life improvements such as a mini-tool bar to allow on the fly mid-combat weapon switching, allowing players to utilise their arsenal to the fullest.
The story itself continues where the previous one ended, a diplomatic mission to secure alliance with Otto von Bergow with Henry and Sir Hans at its core. The party is unfortunately ambushed by an enemy faction during their rest and are forced to hide away to survive in the nearby forest.
The game is everything the fans could’ve wanted, an improvement on existing systems that the prequel built up, which as far as sequels go, is a great selling point.
The game is set to release on 4th of February 2025, so it's the perfect time to play Kingdom Come: Deliverance to brush up on the world!
There’s been talk of a fourth game in the series for a while now and during the 2024 Game Awards, CD Projekt Red released a trailer confirming its future release.
The trailer shows Ciri, adoptive daughter of Geralt (The Witcher trilogy protagonist), taking on her new path as the titular Witcher. Since Ciri herself doesn’t have the skill or experience that Geralt does, she makes up for it by wielding higher level magic instead of relying on the basic signs.
While the story itself isn’t revealed yet, it seems like it’s taking place in the same unnamed “Continent” as the previous iterations.
The game is going to be an open world action RPG, much like Witcher 3. With a potential to explore the world through the eyes of a younger and less experienced Ciri.
Despite the story shifting away from Geralt, The Witcher 4: Polaris is definitely a title worth keeping an eye out for.
While there’s no set release date yet, 2026 seems like a safer bet.
There’s a lot for the fans of open world action RPG fans to feast on next year. With some titles being sequels to beloved franchises, while others boldly introducing new fantastical worlds for players to enjoy.
Either way, there’s a lot happening in 2025 and that’s just a few most anticipated titles, as there’s plenty of other cool titles out there.
RPG fans are eating quite well recently!
The RPG scene is still strong and the interest is still growing. Plenty of subgenres to engage newer players and the veterans alike.
There are some very highly anticipated titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines II, Avowed and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 amongst others.
The Witcher 4: Polaris has a lot of interest from players. Especially since CD Projekt Red still holds a good amount of trust from the players despite the troublesome Cyberpunk 2077 release.
